Top Tips For Writing Your Annual Newsletter 

Now is the time you should start thinking of writing your Annual Newsletter, especially if you don't send them out monthly or quarterly. You can either email them to your clients and prospects or, go one better, have them printed to sent out at the same time as your Corporate Christmas cards. Annual Newsletters give you the chance to showcase your services and products without obvious marketing, while you celebrate your successes of the last 12 months. You can also give your readers a taste of new services and products you might have in the pipeline for next year. 
 
Once you have devised a template you can use them again and again. Your Annual Newsletter is a valuable marketing tool which will also provide you with content for blogs and social media posts.

For our 4th annual Writing Competition, WRITE WAI PR & COPYWRITING SERVICES has joined forces with ESSEX HUNDRED PUBLICATIONS to come up with a really interesting project to hone your writing skills. Our competition is being sponsored by the Colchester Gazette, Colchester Castle and Wivenhoe Bookshop. Winning students will also be given a tour of the Gazette’s Newsroom, they will also have the amazing opportunity to join a Newsroom Conference where the editorial decisions are made and all three winning articles will be published in the Gazette, subject to the Editor’s final approval. 
 
History is who we are and the local area is full fascinating stories. We want you to write a feature or news story, factual or fictional, about a local history subject or perhaps you may want to investigate a local historical myth and present your own conclusions. The judges will rate stories based on the originality of the entry, the quality of the research and standard of English. 
 
Write your article just as if you were writing it for The Gazette, about something that has inspired or amazed you or is newsworthy locally. Local history has a very broad reach and your passion for it must shine through in your writing. The article should be between 300 and 400 words long; it ought to contain quotations from relevant people, facts and figures if applicable and it can contain a photograph relevant to the subject matter. You must also include a short piece (100 words maximum) explaining why you chose your subject matter, how you researched the subject and drew your conclusions. 
 
Your entry will be judged on 3 elements: 
The article itself and the way it inspires the Judges. 
How well you explain the way you did your research. 
The quality and relevance of the additional material e.g. photo, facts, figures and quotations. 
 
Award-winning copywriter and journalist, Sally Anderson-Wai founder of WRITE WAI PR & COPYWRITING SERVICES and Andrew Summers, Managing Editor and contributing author to ESSEX HUNDRED PUBLICATIONS will be judging the entries. Sally has over 30 years experience working for local, national and international media (including the BBC) and marketing firms. For 10 years Andrew printed books, before moving on to selling books both here in the UK and internationally. Now he writes and publishes books.

Entries should be submitted by email to sally@writewai.com in word format with a header 2017 Writing Competition Entry. The closing date is midday December 31st, 2017. Please include your full name, age and the name of the school that you attend. You will also need to confirm that you have your parent/guardian’s permission to enter the competition, be photographed for publicity shots and named in any publicity material.

Entries or part entries may be used by the competition organisers in social media or campaigns to promote the competition. Students full names will not be used only first names (unless agreed by parents/guardians) and school attended. 
The winners details shall not be passed on to any third parties.

7 Hot Tips For Building Your Business During The School Holidays  The school holidays are here and some business owners, who are parents, may be wondering how they are going to cope with growing their enterprises while juggling childcare. It is important to plan to get your work and life balance right, so that you can keep working on your business while giving your family some quality time together. After all, you don't want your offspring to grow up thinking you weren't there for them, do you?  As a business owner and the mother of three teenagers, I have been planning ahead for the end of term for a couple of weeks, so here are my tips for sole traders or small enterprises on how to keep up your business going while your kids are on school holidays. I have come up with a list of 7 hot tips for business owners, like me.  

1) Enjoy spending time with your family, after all your children are only young for a short while. Book a holiday, as you probably deserve one, and then block out all the days on your calendar when you will be away on holiday. 
 
2) Make a ‘To Do List’ to prioritise what needs doing first and set yourself targets and deadlines to keep you on track. 
 
3) Work out when you work best. If you are a morning person, get up early and work. If you work best in the middle of the day, ask your family to entertain themselves for a couple of hours. Tell them you will reward them later by taking them out and make sure you keep your promises or they won’t believe you next time. If you work best in the evening, ask your partner or friends or relatives to watch your kids while you work. 
 
4) Manage your clients’ expectations by giving them deadlines and telling them when you are aiming to have their projects completed. It’s better to do this sooner rather than later to avoid upsetting your clients if you deliver your work, service or product late. 
 
5) Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ask your children’s grandparents, aunts or uncles to have them visit them for a few days or invite them visit you and take your sons and daughters on day trips. Send your teenagers camping or tell them to get a summer job or to offer to do odd jobs for friends and neighbours. 
 
6) Plan play days with friends for younger kids or gatherings or BBQs for teenagers (they probably won't want to hang out with you anyway!). Ask your children’s friends over to play and quite often your kids will get invited to their homes on another day. 
 
7) If you have younger sons and daughters you will probably need to invest in childminders and/or play schemes. You don’t have to do this for the whole of the holiday, but it might be worth it for short bursts in order to get your work done. 
If all else fails, bite the bullet and don’t work in the holidays (delegate work to people like me and Write Wai PR & Copywriting Services where possible).  
Just relax, have fun with your family and plan how best to get back on top of your business once your kids are back at school, after all, you only live once! 

Our Get Healthy Writing Competition Winners...  We’re looking for sponsors for our next competition - could you be one of them?  Write Wai PR & Copywriting Services’s third writing competition was a resounding success with the winners writing about depression, diet and cancer. We’re now looking for sponsors for our next event.  Young people aged from 11 to 16 years from around Colchester submitted entries in a bid to win the fantastic prizes in our ‘Get Healthy Writing Competition’ run by Write Wai PR & Copywriting Services, Kids Backs 4 The Future CIC and the Gazette, and a sponsor was Marathon School Supplies.  Sally Anderson-Wai of Write Wai: “In our digital age where standards of English seem to be falling, we feel it is important to encourage young people in their writing skills. As a former Health Reporter for various media before launching Write Wai, I felt a health theme would be a good topic for the competition, especially as Kids Backs 4 the Future CIC were running the competition with us this year. We are delighted with the entries from across Colchester and had a difficult job choosing the winner.”   

Lyndee Oscar, founder of Kids Backs 4 the Future CIC, said: “Millions of pounds are spent each year on patients suffering from ill health that could be prevented. Currently there a quarter of young people suffering from regular/ daily back pain. Understanding about living a healthy life, physically and emotionally is essential at a young age and should be enforced throughout schooling and beyond.”An osteopath for 25 years, Lyndee has seen a dramatic increase in younger people needing treatment for back pain, a lot of which can be prevented. 
 
Sally added: “Our ‘Get Healthy Writing Competition’ is a great way of starting a journalism career and we will be launching our fourth event later this year. The Gazette has agreed to publish the top three entries, so look out for it’s launch if you wish to participate.” 
 
The winning entry was Chloe Gregory (14) from St Helena School who wrote about depression. It included a personal account of her family’s experiences. Second place went to Jade Bethany Fleur North (13) from St Mary’s School, who discussed how a childhood love of visiting our infamous Colchester zoo resulted in a meatless diet lifestyle and the third prizewinner was Angelica Hedges (14), also from St Mary’s. Her topic highlighted cancer awareness and our local resources. 
 
The judges, Sally and Lyndee had a difficult job and highly commended all of the entries. 
 
"It was a great inspiration to get our young people thinking about, researching and writing a wide range of challenging health issues, which was very admirably. We would like to thank all of the parents who supported their kids, the Gazette and Marathon School Bag Specialist, and It was an honour to have Colchester’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gerard Oxford presenting the prizes,” said Lyndee. 
 
The Prizes included a Fit Bit gadget and £70 of vouchers sponsored by Write Wai PR & Copywriting Services and Kids Backs For The Future. Happy New Year  It is Chinese New Year, so we wanted to wish you a Happy New Year and share with you 5 tips to boost your marketing 2017.  Now is a good time to refresh your marketing plans to help you focus for the rest of the year.  Know your ideal client, from what they are looking for to where they meet and which social media platforms they use, then target your marketing to meet their needs and build your brand.   

 
Review what worked well for you last year and once you know, repeat this tactic. For example, if you gained lots of new leads through a press release, look for something to base a new one on. 
 
Don’t forget to also try something new whether it is a new network, writing a Pulse article for LinkedIn, something to automate your marketing like Hootsuite (www.hootsuite.com) or something to put words on your marketing pictures like Canva (www.canva.com). 
 
Write a marketing strategy, whether it is for your social media, email marketing or general marketing. You can plan for the year ahead by focusing on dates that are relevant to your business e.g. Valentine’s Day for Florists or major exhibition dates for your industry. Most importantly, stick to it! 
 
Look after your current clients. Did you know it costs 80% of your marketing budget to gain a new client but just 20% of designated funds to keep one? Business owners need to remember that their organisation can achieve substantial growth just by appreciating their current customers who might be willing buy extra services or products and will recommend you to others. Trump Waged A War With Words!  Are you like me? Shocked that against all odds, Donald Trump has won the election to be the next president of America. The property tycoon switched his game from Monopoly to play Top Trump and Risk and it has paid off.  Now political analysts across the Globe are investigating what went wrong in Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign to allow a ranked outsider to take the prize. We can only wait to view future developments within trade, industry, politics and finance with some trepidation.  I am not a political analyst and don’t claim to be one. Look up the live opinions from top experts on your screens for a full run down of what worked and what didn’t. 

 
After the outcome of the Brexit referendum, some of us didn’t want to make any predictions. However as a Digital Marketer, PR and copywriter, I watched Clinton give traditional speeches full of political terminology while Trump waged a war with words and emotions directed at the working man and in plain terms that anyone could understand. While the former first lady of the United States, a practicing lawyer and a secretary of state was calm, cool and collected using professional rhetoric, Trump articulated passionately some emotions that the working class had been feeling for years.' 
 
While many of us teach our children to grow up to be considerate to others and to treat everyone equally, whatever their colour, creed, sex or sexual orientation, Trump touched the hearts of the older white Americans with comments that the press claimed were full of racism and misogyny, so much so that even their women wanted to vote for him. He stirred them all up and got them out in masses to vote. That is why he won. What’s done is done. 
 
Let’s learn lessons from his success on how to structure our marketing strategies, how we write and speak in a way that will appeal to those that we want to support us and buy from us. Get rid of any jargon, touch emotions and use the same language as those you want to address. You might then find you will be a winner too!
